Tetra recommend that you test your water for nitrates on a weekly basis as concentrations in excess of 50mg/L can be harmful to fish. In marine tanks concentrations of more than 10mg/L can be harmful to invertebrates. High nitrate levels also encourage algae to grow.
Nitrate is a result of the decomposition of nitrogen containing substances in your tank e.g. fish waste and uneaten food.
