This Multi Test Pond Health Check kit by NT Labs contains 40 accurate tests for each of 3 of the most important parameters for pond water: pH, Ammonia and Nitrite.
pH is the measure of the acidity of your pond. The scale runs from 1-14. Pond fish prefer a pH level of 7-8. Ammonia is produced by fish, plant and food waste and can become toxic very quickly. A desirable Ammonia level is 0mg/L. Levels in excess of 0.2mg/L require instant action and remedy. Nitrite is produced when beneficial Nitrosomonas bacteria break down harmful Ammonia. In turn beneficial Nitrobacters should then break down the Nitrite into Nitrate (which is less toxic and is beneficial to plant growth). However, if there are insufficient Nitrobacters the Nitrite can accumulate and become toxic.
Poor water conditions are the most common cause of ill health in fish. The manufacturer recommend that you test your water at least every 2 weeks. It is particularly important to check water quality: in a new pond, at the beginning of the pond season, after water changes and following filter maintenance.
